URKL in plain English
URKL is a competition in which full-size humanoid robots fight in a ring. For its first season, every team starts with the same basic robot: the EngineAI T800.
That shared robot is the key to understanding the event. Teams are not arriving with wildly different machines. They compete by making the T800 move, balance, react, recover, and fight better through software and allowed changes.

What is EngineAI?
EngineAI—called Zhongqing Robotics in Chinese—is the Shenzhen humanoid robotics company that initiated URKL and manufactures the T800.
It is more than a sponsor. EngineAI provides the standard robot and gives teams the tools they need to connect their own software. The official rules describe URKL as a technical competition open to universities, companies, and research organizations.

The T800 is a full-size humanoid robot. It is the same robot body that every URKL team starts with.

What do URKL teams actually build?
Think of a URKL entry as three layers. Confusing these layers is what makes the names and team poster difficult to read.
The robot
The T800 body, motors, sensors, and tools for connecting team software.
What the team adds
Software, trained moves, balance, recovery, reactions, tactics, and allowed protective gear.
The fighter
A real T800 running the team’s work, sometimes presented with its own competitive identity.

How does the URKL tournament work?

Before the real robot
How did online qualification work?
Qualification was a software audition using a simulated T800, not a remote tournament between physical robots.
- Teams trained movements in simulation.They prepared boxing actions and higher-difficulty movement for a virtual T800.
- They submitted evidence and working files.The rules required an unedited demo video plus the software and setup files needed to run it again.
- Officials checked that the work was real.Technical judges ran each team’s files in the official virtual testing program, called MuJoCo.
- The highest-scoring 32 advanced.Judging covered completion, motion-data work, difficult movements, robustness, and fluidity.
The current stage
What does physical T800 deployment mean?
Teams take software that worked on a virtual robot, load it onto a real T800, and discover whether it still works when the physics are no longer perfect.
A real robot has weight, motors that are not perfect, small delays, an actual floor, and a very real chance of falling over. Something that looks excellent on a computer may behave very differently in the real world.
Opening night
Was White Eagle vs Bullfighter a tournament match?
It was the opening exhibition, not proof that either fighter advanced through the Top 32.
White Eagle and Bullfighter fought five five-minute rounds on July 16. Bullfighter won 3–2. The first URKL play-in officially began after that showcase, so those names should not be placed into the competition bracket unless organizers later identify them as team entries.

Who competes in URKL?
URKL accepts university, company, and independent or mixed teams. Those labels describe who formed an entry; they do not mean separate competitions.

An early EngineAI registration image showed 64 team names across those three categories. It was only a partial snapshot while registration was open—not the confirmed Top 32. Later reporting says more than 200 teams registered and 32 passed qualification.
Do the three entrant types fight separately?
The published rules indicate one combined tournament. The categories describe who formed an entry; everyone follows the same qualification process, and the overall highest-scoring 32 advance. No category quotas, separate brackets, or separate championships have been published.
